Accomplishment

This grammar have two parts, the first one will help you express your accomplishments in the past, while the second one will help you talk about your future objectives and accomplishments.

Present Perfect   I+have+past participle

A: What have you accomplished in the last 5 years?

B:  I’ve managed to buy a new car.

B: I’ve been able to buy a new car.

B: I’ve tried to buy a new car.

Future Perfect   I+will have+past participle

A: What do you hope you’ll have achieved in the next 5 years?

B:  I hope (that) I’ll have bought a new car.

B: I expect I’ll have bought a new car.

Simple past  I+past simple

A: What did you accomplish in the last 3 years?

B:  I managed to buy a new car two years ago.

B: I was able to buy a new car two years ago.

Would like to have + past participle

A: What would you like to have achieved in the next few years?

B:  I’d like to have bought a new car in two years.

Using “hope” for expectation

We use ‘hope’ to talk about things in the present or future that we think have a good chance of happening.

I hope to pass the exam.

I hope to be traveling around Argentina next year.

I hope to have completed this course by next month.

We hope (that) you’ll learn a lot

We hope (that) you’ve learned a lot so far this year.

Comparisons

Examples:

1.A landscaper earns more than an intern.

2.An intern doesn’t earn as much as a landscaper.

3.An intern has better hours than a landscaper.

4.A landscaper has worse hours than an intern.

5.A landscaper is better paid than an intern.

6.An intern is not as well paid as a landscaper.

7.Being an intern is more interesting than landscaping.

8.Landscaping is less interesting than being an intern.

9.Landscaping is harder than being an intern.

10.Being an intern is not as hard as landscaping.

Complex gerund phrases

Examples:

The most challenging thing about being in the Peace Corps is finding a way to fit into the community.

The most rewarding thing about being in the Peace Corps is learning about another culture.
